We were still rehearsing for the dance when Alex finally poofed back. He said heâd been out on one of his pacing walks, and the guys seemed to take that at face value. I didnât know Alex well enough yet to be able to judge, but I did vow to try to keep a closer eye on him, to make sure he was okay. We filled him in quickly, then it was time to put together our set list.
âRemind me later to show you some Sunset Curve songs we want to do with you,â Luke said.
âOoh, show me now,â I said, wagging an eyebrow.
Luke picked up his notebook and flipped to a dog-eared page. âThis oneâs got a great riff.â He picked up his guitar to show me.
Oh, a classic. âSo you want to sample?â I asked.
âWhat do you mean? Whatâs sample?â Luke asked, confused.
âSample someone elseâs song,â I explained. âMe and my mom used to sing that at the top of our lungs in the car. Itâs a classic Trevor Wilson song.â
Now Luke looked totally lost. âNo, itâs a classic our song.â
âPure Sunset Curve,â Reggie agreed. âIâve never heard of Trevor Wilson.â
âMaybe youâre mixing it up with another song?â Alex suggested.
âI donât mix up songs,â I insisted. âTrust me, I used to be best friends with his daughter and hang out at their house all the time. I know the song. HereâIâll prove it.â I pulled out my laptop, searching Google while I talked. A few taps on the keyboard and there it was. I turned the screen around to show them.
âTrevor Wilson. His first album had a ton of hits. But his later stuff was never as good.â
Lukeâs eyes flew open. âThatâs Bobby!â
âSeriously? I just told you his name is Trevor.â The guys were being so insistent; it was weird.
âWell, he must have changed it because thatâs definitely Bobby,â Alex put in. âHe was our rhythm guitarist.â
I couldnât help but laugh. âTrevor Wilson was in your band?â It was just hard to put it togetherâthat major star and these ⦠well, ghosts, living in my motherâs music studio.
Reggie looked horrified at the image on the screen. âI canât get over how old he looks!â
Alex made a face. âYeah ⦠he looks like a substitute teacher.â
Luke looked at me, suspicious. âWhat were his other hits?â
I thought about it. âââGet Lost.ââ
âYeah,â Luke said, taking his guitar off. âI wrote that.â
âââLong Weekendâ?â I tried.
âLuke wrote that, too!â Reggie said.
âââCrooked Teethâ?â I almost didnât want to ask.
âAnd that!â Alex confirmed. âIt was about Reggie.â
âI thought it was about you!â Reggie protested. âI donât like that song anymore.â
âWait,â I said, pressing my hands to my temples. âThis is freaking me out. Trevorâs songs are kind of a big deal to me. He introduced me to rock.â If Trevorâs biggest hits were actually taken from his time with Sunset Curve ⦠what did that mean?
Alex stated the obvious. âNo, he didnât. Luke introduced you to rock.â
I glanced at Luke. âAll this time, I was hoping you guys were connecting me to my mom.
